How to measure
Good guides need good numbers. Measure the clear opening, not the frame outer edge.
Doorways
- Width — narrowest clear gap between architraves, with door open flat (usually 90°).
- Height — floor to lowest point of the lintel or header.
- Depth — wall thickness the item passes through (typically 10–20 cm).
Hallways
- Measure at the narrowest point — radiators, skirting, and dado rails reduce usable width.
- Ceiling height where a tall item might tilt.
Corners
Add a corner turn section where the path changes direction. The planner pivots at that landmark — measure both legs of the L as separate straights with their widths.
Stairs
Use the stair section for the flight or landing. Measure clear width and headroom above the tread nosing — headroom often drops on the turn.
Your item
Measure the overall bounding box. For sofas, include fixed arms. Use extra margin in the planner if the shape is not rectangular.
